Green Buildings, Smart Greenhouses, and Future Aesthetics: How High-Performance Fluoropolymer Films Empower Modern Engineering?

Against the backdrop of modern architecture and ecological agriculture moving towards low-carbon, large-span structures, and smart light/heat control, traditional glass and reinforced concrete are facing disruptive challenges from high-performance fluoropolymer materials. As the “future skin” for global landmark buildings and high-end modern greenhouses, ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) film has become the core material of choice for modern green buildings, sports stadiums, ecological greenhouses, and landmark curtain walls due to its lightweight nature, exceptional weather resistance, high light transmittance, and outstanding ecological sustainability.

Relying on deep expertise in fluoropolymer technology, Fluoever New Material (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. is dedicated to creating the Fluoplus® ETFE series of architectural films, greenhouse films, and weather-resistant tapes. We not only give modern buildings a lightweight, transparent, and free visual soul but also provide global customers with full-lifecycle green building curtain wall solutions, from material customization to technical support.

What is ETFE Film?

ETFE film (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene copolymer film) is a high-performance fluoroplastic material. It inherits the excellent chemical corrosion resistance and extreme temperature tolerance of PTFE, while achieving significant breakthroughs in tensile strength, elongation, and processability. Thanks to its ultra-light weight, excellent light transmittance, outstanding tear resistance, and superb outdoor weather lifespan, ETFE film has become the ideal membrane choice for large public buildings, skylights, pneumatic cushion roofs, and greenhouse structures.

Why is ETFE Widely Accepted in Modern Architecture and Greenhouse Engineering?

From the world-famous “Eden Project” greenhouse in the UK to the iconic “Water Cube” (National Aquatics Center) of the Beijing Olympics, and various smart botanical gardens and atrium landscapes, ETFE frequently takes the stage on landmark projects. The core reasons why this material can break the limits of traditional materials and become the “new favorite” of architects lie in the following advantages:

Extreme Lightweight and Structural Load Reduction (Mechanical Advantage)

ETFE has an extreme lightweight advantage, weighing only about 1% of glass for the same coverage area. This not only greatly reduces the load on the building’s main structure and significantly lowers construction costs, but also makes large-span, futuristic smooth-curved buildings a reality.

Outstanding Self-Cleaning and Weather Resistance (Environmental Advantage)

The surface of ETFE is extremely smooth with a very low friction coefficient, making it difficult for dust to adhere; rain can simply wash it clean. At the same time, it has excellent UV resistance without any additives. Under harsh outdoor UV rays and extreme weather, it will not turn yellow or brittle, leading to very low maintenance costs throughout its life cycle.

Excellent Flame Retardant Safety (Safety Advantage)

This film has passed strict fire safety standards. Although it will melt at extremely high temperatures, the melted droplets will quickly shrink. It is self-extinguishing in the absence of a fire source, produces no toxic smoke, and will not drip and ignite other objects, providing highly reliable safety.

Excellent Control of Light and Heat (Energy-Saving Advantage)

Thanks to its high light transmittance, buildings can receive ample natural light. ETFE films are typically made into pneumatic cushion structures. Combined with specific printing or coatings, they can effectively block heat while maintaining high transparency, thereby greatly reducing the building’s air conditioning and lighting energy consumption.

Fluoplus® ETFE Film Specifications

With extremely high light transmittance and excellent tear resistance, it can perfectly meet the facade and roof design requirements of various large architectural structures.

To meet diverse design needs, we offer the following series of products:

  • Transparent Series: Achieves an extremely high light transmittance of over 90% (based on 200µm), making it the ideal choice for large stadiums and atrium skylights that crave natural light.
  • Diffuse Series: Physically changes the way light transmits, achieving soft, scattered light to avoid glare and eliminate excess heat.
  • Color Series: Offers various standard colors such as natural white, milky white, yellow, blue, gold, and silver; custom colors are also supported to meet the highly personalized appearance designs of landmark buildings, looking even more dazzling with lighting at night.
  • Printed Shading Series: Specific patterns (like silver dots or white dots) are printed on the transparent film’s surface. By adjusting the pattern density, light transmission and heat blocking can be controlled. It can achieve fixed shading and dynamic shading (working with double or multi-layer cushion systems), effectively blocking harsh glare and excessive heat while allowing light in, improving indoor comfort.
  • IR Blocking Series: Features excellent functionality in blocking infrared heat wavelengths. It can effectively block over 50% (200µm) of infrared heat from entering, lowering indoor temperatures and improving building energy efficiency.

Size and Customization:

  • Thickness: Standard specifications include 100μm, 150μm, 200μm, 250μm, 300μm, etc. Thickness can be customized based on the load and span calculations of the building project.
  • Width: Standard width is 1550mm, with a maximum custom width up to 1800mm.

Fluoplus® ETFE Greenhouse Film

  • High Transparency Series: Features excellent UV transmittance and a visible light transmittance of over 92%, with outstanding full-band spectral transmittance (280nm~2500nm). This ensures plants receive ample and even natural light throughout their growth cycle. It is especially suitable for premium fruit and vegetable or high-value flower greenhouses that demand high light levels.
  • Light Diffusion Series: Using special formulas and embossed textures, it converts direct sunlight into even, diffused light. This effectively eliminates uneven lighting caused by greenhouse frame shadows and prevents intense direct light from burning plant leaves, flowers, and fruits. It improves quality and yield, suitable for planting scenarios with strict requirements for temperature and light uniformity.
  • Heat Insulation Series: Through effective IR blocking technology, it allows most visible light to pass through while blocking excessive infrared heat, reducing stuffiness inside the greenhouse. Combined with an internal anti-drip or hydrophilic anti-condensation coating, water vapor flows down smoothly, preventing drips on plant surfaces. It effectively reduces energy consumption for cooling the greenhouse, providing a constant, suitable growth temperature for crops, unaffected by condensation during extreme weather temperature drops.
  • Standard Thickness: Covers various specifications such as 100μm, 150μm, and 200μm, and can be customized according to customer needs.
  • Standard Width: Standard width is 1550mm, with a maximum custom width up to 1800mm.

Application of Fluoplus® ETFE Fixing Tape in Architecture and Greenhouses

A perfect ETFE membrane structure building requires not only high-performance membrane materials but also high-quality auxiliary accessories. Fluoplus® ETFE weather-resistant tape plays an indispensable protective role during project construction, cushion edge sealing, and later maintenance.

When an ETFE building or greenhouse suffers minor scratches, punctures, or tears in local areas due to extreme typhoons, hail, or external scraping, there is no need to replace the entire massive membrane. Simply clean the surface and directly apply the dedicated Fluoplus® ETFE tape. This tape perfectly fuses with the main membrane at a molecular level for strong adhesion. While maintaining the same high light transmittance and visual integration, it instantly restores the airtight sealing and waterproof level of the cushion, greatly reducing the owner’s later maintenance expenses.
