Fluoplus® Fluoroplastic Sheets: Solutions for the Chemical Industry

Case Study

The chemical industry frequently faces challenges involving high temperatures, highly corrosive media (such as strong acids, strong alkalis, and organic solvents), and stringent cleanliness requirements. Thanks to the exceptional chemical resistance and unique manufacturing process, Fluoplus® PFA fluoroplastic sheet effectively minimizes welding seams in equipment linings, thereby enhancing overall sealing performance and extending the equipment’s service life against corrosion.

Key performance highlights: precise matching of 3 major materials.

Fluoplus® fluoroplastic sheets (available in plain sheet and glassfiber-backed sheet) provide a long-lasting anti-corrosion barrier for chemical processing equipment, thanks to their exceptional chemical inertness.

  • PFA Sheets (Premium Grade): Capable of withstanding continuous operating temperatures up to 260°C and offering superior chemical resistance, these sheets are engineered for extreme conditions involving high temperatures, strong acids, and powerful oxidizing agents.
  • FEP and PVDF Sheets (Standard Grade): While maintaining excellent corrosion resistance, these sheets offer enhanced mechanical strength and scratch resistance, striking an optimal balance between performance and cost.
  • Shared Advantages: Non-stick properties, self-lubrication, excellent flame retardancy, extremely low water absorption (<0.03%), and exceptional chemical stability.
  • Physicochemical Barrier: The PFA/FEP/PVDF fluoroplastic sheets come into direct contact with the medium, providing the equipment with absolute chemical corrosion resistance and a wide operating temperature range, while ensuring minimal surface leaching.
  • Robust Backing: Glassfiber backing provides superior tear and tensile strength, making the sheets perfectly compatible with bonding processes using epoxy resins, unsaturated resins, and similar materials.

Thickness of 1–3 mm and width of 1,300 mm—significantly reducing weld seams: Produced via a melt-cast extrusion process, the sheets reach a width of 1,300 mm. Large-format sheets effectively minimize the number of welded joints required for lining large storage tanks, thereby reducing the risk of leakage at the source and extending the equipment’s overall service life.

  • Produced in a cleanroom environment to ensure high purity: The entire manufacturing process takes place in a cleanroom setting, guaranteeing high material purity and freedom from contamination—making it ideal for storage and transport applications involving electronic chemicals and other substances with stringent purity requirements.
  • Easy to weld with a smooth surface finish: The material is easily welded using hot-air methods and is convenient to fabricate; its high surface smoothness prevents material adhesion, facilitating routine cleaning and maintenance.

4 Key Application Scenarios in the Chemical Industry

Fluoplus® fluoroplastic sheets are particularly well-suited to addressing the following pain points in the chemical industry:

  • Reactor and storage tank linings: Replacing traditional fiberglass or rubber linings to provide long-term resistance against highly corrosive substances such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrofluoric acid.
  • Storage and transport of high-purity chemicals: Leveraging characteristics such as extremely low extractables and low moisture absorption for use as linings in containers and piping for semiconductor-grade chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates.
  • Anti-sticking in polymerization reactions: Utilizing extremely low surface energy to solve “wall-clinging” and “reactor-sticking” issues during polymer polymerization, thereby boosting production efficiency and reducing downtime for cleaning.
  • Environmental waste gas treatment towers: Offering superior weather and corrosion resistance, these materials are widely used for linings or structural components in chemical waste gas scrubbers and flue gas treatment equipment.
