Fluoplus® Medical-Grade ETFE/FEP Film Solutions

Case Study

As the pharmaceutical industry imposes increasingly stringent safety standards for injectables, biologics, and highly sensitive drugs, issues such as extractables, protein adsorption, and gas permeability associated with traditional rubber stoppers pose significant challenges to long-term drug stability.

Fluoplus introduces high-performance ETFE (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer) and FEP (fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer) films specifically designed for rubber stopper lamination. Leveraging exceptional chemical inertness, superior heat-sealing capabilities, and outstanding barrier properties, we provide cutting-edge solutions for pharmaceutical packaging—spanning everything from raw materials to coating processes—to ensure the safety, stability, and longevity of pharmaceutical products.

Choosing Fluoplus® means choosing material compliance and biosafety that meet stringent medical standards.

Serving as a medical-grade guardian in the rubber stopper film lamination industry:

  • Regulatory Compliance and Toxicological Standards: Fluoplus® ETFE/FEP films feature a high purity that meets the requirements for physicochemical testing and biocompatibility assessment applicable to plastic container and packaging systems. The material is free from plasticizers and antioxidants, posing no risk of heavy metal leaching.
  • Low Leaching and Low Permeability: Third-party migration testing confirms that extractables (including non-volatile residues and small organic molecules) detected during long-term stability studies remain far below pharmacopeial thresholds. Additionally, the material’s water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and oxygen transmission rate (OTR) are approximately one-tenth those of conventional coating materials, providing a “sterile-grade” physical barrier for lyophilized powder injections and highly sensitive liquid injections.

Key performance capabilities addressing the core pain points of the pharmaceutical industry.

Tailored for specific industrial applications involving stopper film coating and cell culture, our films achieve a precise balance of physical and chemical properties:

  • Exceptional Purity and Ultra-Low Adsorption (for Biologics):The film surface features extremely low surface energy, offering outstanding hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics.
  • Biosafety and Cellular Inertness (Designed for Cell Culture):Made from FEP, the film offers excellent biocompatibility; it releases no toxic substances that could inhibit cell growth and exhibits minimal non-specific adsorption of proteins, peptides, and growth factors. It is perfectly suited for the production of high-value biologics and cell therapies, effectively preserving cell viability and yield.
  • Resistance to Rigorous Sterilization Processes:Even after repeated, high-intensity sterilization cycles, the films remain free from cracking, blistering, or delamination, ensuring the sealing integrity of the stoppers.
  • Excellent Processability and Formability:Fluoplus® films feature a wide, stable heat-sealing window and maintain minimal shrinkage during thermoforming. Combined with a unique surface treatment process, they enable seamless bonding with halogenated butyl rubber substrates, completely eliminating film rupture and blistering.

A portfolio of customized lamination products tailored to different dosage forms.

  • FEP Series: Primarily designed for rubber stoppers used in aqueous injections and cell culture applications, focusing on low migration and low adsorption. It features exceptional surface inertness and is non-cytotoxic; it does not adsorb serum or cytokines, thereby preserving the integrity of nutrients within the cell culture system. It is an ideal contact film material for high-end cell culture bags, shake flasks, and bioreactors.
  • ETFE Series: Primarily designed for freeze-drying stoppers, focusing on high tear strength, high abrasion resistance, and impact resistance.
  • Customizable Products: Thickness ranges from 25 to 100 μm; available in three specifications—standard, high, and ultra-high tensile strength (please consult a Fluoplus sales representative for details).
